On Coaching, Part 6: FAQs (and Their Answers)!

Is coaching the same thing as mentoring or counseling?

Nope! A coach will help you focus on achieving specific future goals and objectives. A coach is 100% invested in these goals alongside you in a structured consistent relationship over a series of months. A mentor, on the other hand, is normally focused on general goals or overall development in the context of a more loosely structured relationship. A counselor is focused on the past and on healing the roots of current mindsets and issues.

How do I know if I’m ready to have a professional coach?

You are ready if you are both hungry for change in your professional life and willing to be stretched outside of your comfort zone. Coaching requires a vulnerability and willingness to shift your mindset that often feels uncomfortable. Is your urgency level to reach your goals high enough to push through this discomfort and acquire a new perspective? Are you ready to change some habits and shake some things up in your life? You might be stuck in a position that is no longer a fit, overwhelmed entering a brand new position, or frustrated with a challenge that is blocking your success at work. Whatever your situation, coaching is for people hungry to achieve specific goals, grow quickly in their career, and endure some growing pains to get there.

Can I ask my company to pay for coaching?

Yes, some companies do sponsor professional coaching for executives and high-performers in the company. However, sometimes a company will limit the pool of options to “internal coaches” who are vetted and have an agenda to recommend a specific direction for your growth. This may be limiting if, for example, you are thinking of moving on from the company or desiring to speak about confidential topics. Hiring an independent coach, whether self-sponsored or company sponsored, will give you the freedom to choose someone that is the right fit for you. A right fit between coach and client is crucial for you to succeed in your coaching journey.

Will coaching be worth the investment?

If and only if you put in the work, follow through on the plan you make with your coach, and show up to your sessions ready to be honest and fully present. You will be amazed at the professional growth and advancement you can achieve with your coach in just a matter of months. Here is what our clients have experienced….[testimonials]
